My politics were inspired by my upbringing as a vicar's daughter in a deprived council estate. My father's ministry to the needy of the area inspired values that still hold true today.
I am passionate about ensuring that people, whatever their background, have every opportunity to fulfil their potential.
I was instrumental in establishing and securing the Welsh Assembly as a key member of the 'Yes for Wales' campaign.
I worked tirelessly in the European Parliament as the MEP for Mid & West Wales to help secure millions of pounds for Wales' poorest communities.
I championed the cause of fighting fuel poverty in Europe and helped to ensure that every nation in the EU now has to present a strategy for tackling the problem.
In the House of Lords I was instrumental in pushing back against the vindictive Tory Trade Union Bill. I also fought for gay marriage rights and as Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs and Wales, helped to change laws and influence policy. Most recently, I led the charge to expand Welsh devolved powers with the Wales Act (2017).
As a backbencher in the Welsh Parliament I represented the people of Mid and West Wales at every opportunity; not least, with the help of experts, in bringing a Rural Development plan to fruition - elements of which I am pleased to say are being delivered.
I have also sought to bring much needed attention to mental health and debt awareness, animal welfare, arts and culture, brain injury rehabilitation and the ticking time-bomb of social care.
I was proud to join the Welsh Government in 2019. First as Minister for Lifelong Learning, where I was able to oversee an ambitious apprenticeship programme and introduce policy to enable people to train for jobs where they will be able to command better salaries.
In December 2018, I was appointed to the Cabinet as Minister for International Relations & Welsh Language.
In this capacity, I have promoted our nation and our culture at the UN and beyond, developing a future-proof international strategy, which highlights the steps we will take to ensure Wales has an increasing profile and influence in the world.
